Spatial Theory Maps:

Mapping Marc Augé's Concept of Non-Place

This map is inspired by Marc Augé's spatial theory of "non-place" or non-lieux within the context of Orlando's urban landscape. Contrasting impersonal spaces—airports, malls, highways—with community-based areas like neighborhoods, parks, and cultural venues. Non-places, marked in black, signify the spaces designed for transient movement and consumption rather than for connection. This map was created using parcel data and reflects on how the urban fabric shapes our social world.

Florence, Italy: A Figure-Ground Study

This map is based on the figure-ground diagramming method pioneered by Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter.

In this map of Florence, Italy, the city’s built form is rendered with the poetic clarity of simplicity: the dark black poché of buildings, sky blue waters, and white open space. In this architectural drawing, a dialogue unfolds about built and unbuilt space—that has shaped and defined Florence for centuries.
